Drug Proving
Drug Proving also termed as Homoeopathic Pathogenetic Trial (HPT) is a process in which drug substances are put into trial on healthy human volunteers and their pathogenetic effects are observed, noted and compiled as the first step to introduce the drug in the Homoeopathic Materia Medica. The process of finding the pathogenetic effect and therefore the therapeutic utility of a drug substance by carrying out drug proving trial of a drug substance is a unique process in Homoeopathy unlike the conventional system of medicine where animal experimentation forms the basis of evaluation of therapeutic effects of the drug.
Drug proving research was identified as one of the priority research areas by the Homœopathic Research Committee which was established in 1963 by Government of India. Drug proving research trials were initiated in 1969, when the Government formed Central Council of Research in Indian Systems of Medicine and Homœopathy (CCRIMH) for conducting systematic research in these systems. The Central Council for Research in Homœopathy (CCRH) was formed in 1978 and has undertaken it as a continuing research programme with its focus on proving of fragmentarily proved drugs and indigenous drugs whose standardization studies (physico- chemical and pharmacognostic parameters) has been completed. However, over the period, the proving trials on new drugs which are known in the other systems of medicine have been also taken up. The toxicity and safety trials are conducted to find out the first safe dose before taking up trials on these new drugs.

The Council’s first double blind RCT protocol was accepted in 1980. At present, the Drug Proving Research trials (HPTs) are being conducted as per the Generic protocol which is in consonance with the Drug Proving guidelines specified by international organizations like LMHI, ECH and HPCUS. These trials are being carried out at the following 09 centers of the Council in association with 17 homoeopathic medical colleges.
The nine Drug Proving Centers of the Council are:
1. Dr. D. P. Rastogi Central Research Institute (H), NOIDA (Uttar Pradesh) - [DDPRCRIH, NOIDA]
2. National Homoeopathy Research Institute in Mental Health, Kottayam (Kerala) - [NHRIMH, Kottayam]

Homoeopathic Pathogenic Trial (Drug Proving Research) Portal

To empower the Drug Proving Research, the Council has developed ‘Homoeopathic Pathogenetic Trial (Drug Proving Research) Portal’. It was launched by Sh. Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Cabinet Minister of AYSUH on 10 th April 2022 during World Homoeopathy Day 2022. The portal went live on 30 th March 2023. URL: https://hpt.ccrhindia.in
This web-based portal is the first of its kind, which will enable us to collect the proving data in real-time. This platform has been designed as per the Drug Proving Research Protocol of the Council.
This portal has two domains, namely ‘Public domain’ and ‘Private domain’. Through the ‘Public domain’ the know-how of the Council’s Drug Proving Research programme shall be accessible to the public. The list of Research Institutes associated Homoeopathic Medical colleges and colleges getting technical support from CCRH, the Roles and Responsibilities of the users/stakeholders and Frequently Asked Questions will be available under this domain. The ‘Private domain’ will be accessible only to the authorized users which includes Provers (enrolled volunteers), Proving Masters, Proving Associates, Allopathic Consultants engaged in this program, the Coord inator and Administrator of this program.
Through this cloud-based platform the data of provers at different geo-locations can be collected and collated at one place. In the first phase the Research Institutes of the Council where the Drug Proving Research project is ongoing with 17 Homoeopathic Medical Colleges is being covered. In the next phase the 03 Homoeopathic Medical Colleges have been included and 04 have been in the pipeline. Vision is to reach out globally to make best use of this portal.
The Homoeopathic Medical Colleges which have expressed interest in taking up Drug Proving Research Trials at their respective institutes but are not in the near vicinity of the Council’s institutes or units are being provided technical support by sharing the research protocol, conducting orientation workshops, and providing the HPT portal platform for recording the data and shall be considered as one of the Drug Proving Centers. Specific Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) in this context have been signed with colleges. The following colleges have been included as Drug Proving Centers and have initiated the trials at their respective colleges:
1. Gujarat Homeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Savli, Gujarat. 2. Sarada Krishna Homeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Tamil Nadu. 3. Dr. V. H. Dave Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Anand, Gujarat. (Pre-trial Medical Examination completed, the list of provers to be finalized for undertaking the trial) 4. Late Mrs. Housabai Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Nimshirgaon, Tal-Shirol, Kolhapur, Maharashtra. (Pre-trial Medical Examination being undertaken)
MoUs have been signed with the following colleges shall be included as Drug Proving Centers after the completion of all prerequisites: 1. Father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Karnataka. 2. BVVS Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Bagalkot, Karnataka. 3. MNR Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Fasalwadi, Sangareddy, Telangana.
