a) About the Institute

Central Research Institute of Homoeopathy located at A-1/1, Sector 24, NOIDA, Uttar Pradesh is one of the premier research institutes of Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, New Delhi under Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India, came into existence w.e.f 1st May, 2007.

It was named as Dr. D.P. Rastogi Central Research Institute of Homoeopathy on 7 ^th October 2015 and officially inaugurated by Shri Shripad Naik, Honble Minister of State (Independent charge), Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India.

Late Dr. D.P. Rastogi (1939-2010) was the Director of Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, New Delhi from 1984-1999. His major contribution in the field of Homoeopathy started with the Formulation of Homoeopathic Central Council Act in 1973. He introduced Homoeopathy in Drug and Cosmetic Act and took initiatives for publication of Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India. He was a passionate teacher, author, physician and researcher. He is also known as the Ambassador for Indian Homoeopathy and has been honoured with numerous awards, to name a few:

The Hahnemann Award in 1995
Dhanwantri Award in 1997
Hahnemann Memorial Award in 2002
The Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008

The institute has been established with its focus on research and engaged for overall development and promotion of Homoeopathic system of medicine through scientific research. There is full fledge hospital set up including OPD, IPD, Laboratory facilities along with speciality clinics viz. ENT, Ophthalmology, Physiotherapy, Lifestyle Disorder Clinic, Dermatology and Rheumatology clinics are running successfully within the institute. Apart from catering to the needs of the patients, the institute carries out research in the field of Drug Standardization, Drug Proving, Clinical Verification and Clinical Research.

The institute endeavours to keep pace with the time and conduct research on the scientific parameters without deviating from the principles of homoeopathy, so that the results of these scientific studies may be used not only by the homoeopathic fraternity but the scientific world for the betterment of mankind as well.

Apart from the primary focus, the institute is also developing Resource Centre of Information on Homoeopathy.

b) Mandate of the Institute

To explore various homoeopathic research areas involving multi-disciplinary approach in the light of modern scientific parameters.
To standardize homoeopathic drugs in terms of their pharmacognostical, physico-chemical and pharmacological profiles for quality control of homoeopathic drugs.
To prove coded homoeopathic drugs on healthy human beings through double blind technique.
To clinically verify the pathogenesis of proved/partially proved homoeopathic drugs.
To work in the field of fundamental, applied and evidence based research areas to explore the possibilities of solution of problem related to potency and mechanism of action of homoeopathic drugs scientifically.
To collaborate with other Institutes (Homoeopathic and Allied) for taking up research projects and exchange information with other Institutions of Excellence for promotion of Homoeopathy.
To propagate research findings and awareness amongst the homeopathic fraternity in particular and masses in general; through books, monographs, journals, newsletter, I.E.C. Material, CME, audio visuals etc. through National Resource Centre, Public Information cell, Arogya melas, Awareness camps etc.
To make efforts for the capacity building of scientists, Para-medical staff, administrative staff by organizing and participating in the Continuing Medical Education, Workshops and Seminars at national and international level.
To provide effective and free health care services to the needy at grass root level through its regular OPDs, IPDs and health camps.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES OF THE INSTITUTE:

Drug standardization program: (NABL Accredited)

Standardization work of allotted drugs

DDPRCRI(H) Noida has contributed in laying down the pharmacognostic, physico-chemical and pharmacological standards of homoeopathic drugs from herbal, chemical and animal sources for manufacturing purpose. The Council has undertaken pharmacognostical studies on 317 drugs, physico-chemical studies on 336 drugs and pharmacological studies on 151 drugs. 149 drugs have been studied in all three aspects. The drug standardization data are provided to the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Committee for inclusion in the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India, a reference book used by the homoeopathic industry for manufacturing homoeopathic medicines.

Research Activities

Drug standardization department was established in 1979 at HPL Ghaziabad and shifted to DDPRCRIH, Noida in 2008. Since then, this department has developed pharmacopoeial standards of pharmacognostical and physico-chemical parameters of 202 drugs. Later on, state of art research labs viz., Pharmacognosy, Physico-Chemical, Pharmacology, Molecular biology, Microbiology, Zebrafish lab, In-house Pharmacy lab and Animal house as per CPCSEA norms have also been developed with modern Instrumentation facility. Since then, DDPRCRI(H) contributed a lot in different research programs in every area of research be it pharmacognosy, physio-chemical, pharmacology or microbiology to achieve the mandate.

9.2 Drug Proving Research Programme

Besides being the Nodal Office for Drug Proving since July 2014, this institute is one of the drug proving centers since 2007 which conducts Drug Proving Research Trials to record the signs and symptoms of coded drugs on healthy volunteers, in collaboration with Bakson Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Greater Noida and Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, New Delhi. Since 2019, this center initiated a Drug Proving Research trial in collaboration with Dr. B. R. Sur Homoeopathic Medical College and Research Center, New Delhi.

Out of 125 drugs proved by the Council so far, 32 drugs have been proved and Sensitivity trial on 3 coded drugs is ongoing under this programme by the Institute. Research papers on 06 drugs have been published in Peer reviewed journal and proving data of 17 drugs (including the ones published in the journal as well) has been published in Drug Proving volumes 4, 5 and 6 books published by the Council. 9.3Clinical Verification

Verification of drugs gives more reliability and helps us in creating an authentic Materia Medica. Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy has been conducting clinical verification studies of indigenous, rare and fragmentarily proved drugs since its inception in 1975. Some of these drugs were first proved by CCRH. Being a multicentric research study, DDPRCRIH, Noida has been a study site of clinical verification since 2007. 81 drugs have been clinically verified during this period which includes 60 drugs of plant origin, 06 drugs of animal origin, 13 drugs of chemical origin, 01 sarcode and 01 nosode. The Institute has contributed to the publication of the 1st, 2^nd, 3^rd, 4^th ,5^th and 6th volumes of the book ‘Study of Homoeopathic medicines through clinical verification – A new perspective’ which contains clinical verification data of 124 drugs.

Future Vision

Upgrading the existing infrastructure to that of a Centre of Excellence for Drug Development

Development of any Medical system depends on the four core sectors namely Medical Education, Research, Drug Development and Patient care services.

a) The unique strength of DDPRCRI (H) Noida is in the area of Drug development. Since inception, it has been working in the area of Drug Standardization with an output of 20 publications in peer reviewed journals and contribution in around 20 books published by the Council. The centre has developed Pathology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Pharmacognosy, Physico-Chemical Laboratory, Pharmacology and Zebra Fish Lab. In addition to ANIMAL HOUSE which needs to be adequately equipped with state of the art machinery and man power as per CPSCEA guidelines to develop it in to a National Institute of Excellence. The proposed In-house Pharmacy shall be a boon in providing health care delivery to common man in a cost effective manner. It would also prove to be a milestone in the development of new drugs and carry out their safety and efficacy studies and evolve their pharmacological action.

It is proposed to have an In House Pharmacy with the following infrastructure:

● Raw drug storage room- Air curtain, passing bench, Mirror, side raw drug storage, space for shoe wrapping machine, lab coat hanger and sanitizer stand.

● Trituration room- 2-Triturator machine platform, Metal transparent cupboards for chemicals, triturates, toxic chemicals and lactose, Center work bench, and Weighing Balance platform.

● Mother Tincture room- Platform for segregation and drying of plant drugs; Platform for Weighing Balance, Chopper, Mixer Grinder, Sieving assembly, Transparent metal cupboard for glassware ,etc, Work Bench at center, Platform for Hot Air Oven and Percolator assembly, DM and purified water supply.

● Potentization room .- Antivibration table with noise proof wall for 3 potentizers, ,Exit door , Tablet machine space, Work Bench for Dilutions, DM and purified water supply, Transparent metal cupboard for glassware ,etc.

● Packaging room - Bottle capping and sealing machine, Packaging bench , Transparent metal cupboards, Label printing machine.

● Documentation room -Transparent metal cupboards, Racks for documentation of COA certificates for chemicals ,raw drug authenticity certificates, MT certificate, IPQC records, BMR records, and other file work.

b) The Outpatient Department (OPD) attracts about 400-450 patients daily and has a 50 bedded hospital with about 70% bed occupancy. The OPD and IPD are open to general cases and these patients can be utilized as a good research resource. The institute provides various laboratory facilities. The institute is presently equipped with radiological department with the facilities of Digital X-ray machine and ultrasonography machine.

c) Introduction of academic program. The institute proposes to have PhD in Materia Medica and Pharmacy. Introduction of academic programme will need the signing of MoU with Academic institutions.

When it is developed into a National Homoeopathy Drug Research Institute with a special focus on Drug Development, it will be beneficial to public, students, teachers, industry and researchers. The proposed National Institute shall have the prime mandate of filling the gaps that exist in the field of Drug Standardisation, Drug proving and Clinical verification in Homoeopathy. The institute is expected to set benchmarks in academics, research and health care for other institutions in Homoeopathy in India and abroad.

DELIVERABLES

The core objectives of the institute will be the following:-

(i) Setting quality control parameters and manufacturing processes of Homoeopathic medicines and products

(ii) Preparation and Potentization of new drugs and evaluation of their pharmacological activity

(iii) Development of Human Resources with interdisciplinary and integrated teaching & training

(iv) To develop state of art Pathology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Molecular Biology Labs for developing new drugs in Homoeopathy.

(v) To provide effective and free health care services at the grass root level in a cost effective way.

(vi) Reaching out to people to create awareness about the scope of Homoeopathy among the masses.
