History of NHRIMH

The National Homoeopathy Research Institute in Mental Health (NHRIMH), formerly known as Central Research Institute for Homoeopathy, Kottayam; an Institute under the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy(CCRH), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has been providing quality services to patients for the past 46 years and conducting clinical research, especially in the field of psychiatry. This is the only Institute in India treating Psychiatric disorders, with the inpatient department providing Homoeopathic treatment under CCRH.

This Institute was established in 1974 to develop Homoeopathic research and education in Kerala. The erstwhile Homoeopathic Research Centre was started by His Holiness Swamy Athuradas in the year 1968 which was taken over by the Central Council for Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (CCRIMH) in the year 1973 and was established as a grant in aid Regional Research Institute with 25 bedded IPD in the year 1974. Later on, in 1978, when CCRIMH was dispersed into CCRAS, CCRUM, CCRYN, and CCRH, this Institute came under CCRH.

This was upgraded 1982 to Central Research Institute for Homoeopathy with 50 bedded indoor facilities. In 2009, the Institute started functioning in its new building constructed on 1.78 acres of land allotted by the Government of Kerala. Subsequently, the State Government allotted 7.37 acres of additional land for further expansion and development.

In 2016, the Institute was further upgraded as National Homoeopathy Research Institute in Mental Health (NHRIMH) to introduce academic programmes to enhance the academic standards in Homeopathy along with quality research activities. The Institute conducts Postgraduate courses in Psychiatry, Practice of Medicine, and Ph.D., affiliated with Kerala University of Health Sciences, Thrissur.

Institute provides Hostel facilities for students pursuing M.D. courses in the Institute.

Facilities available at NHRIMH

1. OPD Services

Every day OPD will function from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm. Apart from General O.P.Ds following special OPDs are working on respective days. The registration counter will be open from 6 am to 12 pm, and issuing the tokens to the patients for the smooth running of the OPDs. There will be General OPDS for General Medicine, and General Psychiatry will be functioning every day except Central Govt Public Holidays. Furthermore, one General O.P.D. and General Psychiatry OPD will perform on public holidays except for Sundays.

SPECIAL OPDS

General Psychiatry OPD – This OPD treats different types of Psychiatric diseases like Schizophrenia, BPAD, Alcohol dependent and withdrawal syndromes, Psychosis NOS, Conduct disorders, Substance abuse disorders, etc.,

Child Psychiatry OPD – In this OPD, different types of Psychiatric disorders in children, like Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, Mental Retardation disorders, Down syndrome, Conduct disorders, etc., are treated.

Mother and Child Care Clinic – Provide treatment facilities for antenatal and postnatal complications like Chronic backache, piles, etc., and care for children below 12 years of age every Monday as a part of the National Campaign for Healthy Mother and Happy Child.

Gastroenterology OPD– Will function every Monday, treating gastric, abdominal, and liver disorders.

Nephrology OPD. It functions every Tuesday and treats urolithiasis (Kidney and bladder stones), Chronic Kidney disorders, Benign Prostate Hyperplasia, Cystitis, etc.

Infertility OPD. – Function every Tuesday. This OPD treats infertility in males due to Low sperm count, Varicocele, and in Females with PCOD, Uterine fibroid, unexplained Infertility causes, etc.

Rheumatology & Neurology OPD– Functions every Wednesday. In this OPD, acute and Chronic Rhuematolgical disorders like Rheumatoid arthritis, Gout, SLE, Chronic Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, Migraine headache, Parkinsonism, etc., are treated.

ENT Clinic –. It functions on Thursday and treats ear, nose, and throat disorders.

Lifestyle Disorders OPD: This OPD Functions every Thursday. Lifestyle disorders like Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Cardiovascular diseases, Obesity, depression, etc., are treated here.

Endocrinology OPD.– It functions every Thursday and treats disorders like Thyroid complaints, PCOD, Menopause, and other endocrinology disorders.

Dermatology OPD. – It functions every Friday and treats various types of Eczema, Psoriasis, Vitiligo, warts, and Acne patients.

Cardiology OPD.– It functions every Friday for Hypertension, coronary arterial diseases, Dyslipidemia, and peripheral vascular disorders.

Oncology OPD. – Functions every Saturday and provides treatment to all types of cancer patients.

Pulmonology OPD– Functions every Saturday in this OPD.Different types of respiratory disorders like Asthma, COPD, Respiratory tract Infections, Adenoids, etc. are treated.

2. INPATIENT SERVICES

The new building complex with an additional 50 beds facility was inaugurated by Sri. Kodikkunnil Suresh, The then Hon'ble Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Govt. of India on 25th February 2014. The Institute has 100 bedded facilities, including 17 pay wards of 7 A/C rooms and ten non-A/C rooms. In IPD, patients are provided with diet, recreational facilities, and vocational training as per the need of the condition.

Inpatient services are provided for those who require continuous observation and care according to the disease condition. The IPD admission is to be decided by the concerned doctor, and proper written direction is to be given to the Sister in charge of admission. The Sister in charge coordinates all the admissions in consultation with the Medical superintendent.

Psychiatry: Inpatient Care

a. Inpatient admission

1. Admissions to the Hospital have been guided by the country's mental health regulations.

2. The duration of stay can vary depending on an individual patient's condition.

3. Inpatient admission, especially to psychiatry wards, is done only when another relative/ family member or a close confidant can stay with the patient around the clock. The Same-gender is preferable as bystanders, especially in Female wards. This is hospital policy and is non-negotiable for safety and security reasons.

4. Once the patient/patient's relative's treating doctor decides to admit the patient, and will be sent to the admission counter to provide details and for payment if admitted to the pay ward.

5. The patient will be received by the nursing staff, who will also explain to you the rules and regulations of the Hospital and the visiting time of the doctors, therapists, and residents.

b. Hospital Stay

1.When you are admitted, a team of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers, occupational therapists, and psychiatric nurses will care for the patient.

2.The consulting physician will see you on Consultant Rounds.

3.The patient will be seen by a junior and senior resident (PG) daily. Any clarifications can be held with the nursing staff or the senior resident. The senior physician will directly supervise the senior resident. The Consultant is aware of all your details through the residents. Senior Residents will regularly appraise the patient's progress to the consulting doctor.

4.Required therapists and counselors will also consult the patient if required.

5.The patient may also be referred to various other departments and therapies depending on his/her need.

c. Discharge process

1. The discharge date is intimated by the treating doctor well in advance. Be sure to prepare yourself for discharge and clarify all your needs with the resident.
2. You/ your relative will be given a discharge summary from the Hospital with all your treatment details. At the same time, you will be prescribed medications and will be given a follow-up date that coincides with the treating team's follow-up schedule (as explained above).
3. Any other therapies that require follow-up on an out-patient basis will be intimated to you by the therapist. You need to follow up with them separately and follow up with your treating doctor.

3. Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation center
 

The division of Occupational Therapy was inaugurated by Shri Sripad Yesso Naik, Hon'ble Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India, on 10th January 2015. The Occupational Therapy Department provides rehabilitative services for people with psychiatric disorders. Vocational, cognitive therapy, and other forms of psychosocial rehabilitation measures are available to support the patients to integrate into society. Lifestyle Management, Community living skills training, etc., are also imparted to the patients.

4. Physiotherapy

The Department of physical medicine and Rehabilitation caters to rehabilitation services for patients. The physiotherapy department runs from 9.00 am to 4 pm on all working days. Physiotherapists provide consultation for common diseases like musculoskeletal disorders, Central nervous system disorders and also execute treatment plans to rehabilitate psychiatric patients with somatoform disorders to improve their muscle strength, and endurance and to reduce their level of anxiety and depression.

5. Yoga therapy

Yoga is a discipline based on an extremely subtle science focusing on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is an art and science of healthy living. Yoga leads to perfect harmony between mind and body, man and nature, and individual and universal consciousness. Yoga helps to build up psycho-physiological health and emotional harmony; and manage daily stress and its consequences. Yoga is also useful in conditions where stress is believed to play a role. Yogic practices such as Yogasanas, Pranayama, Dhyana (meditation), cleansing and relaxation practices, etc., help modulate the physiological response to stressors.

The Department of Yoga in this Institute was established in 2017 and inaugurated by Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ministry of AYUSH. This department conducts Yoga classes for Inpatients and outpatients daily from 7.00 am. to 8.00 am. Individual sessions are also conducted with the patients on a therapy basis and according to their requirements.

6. Pharmacovigilance centre

Pharmacovigilance for ASU &H drugs is a central sector scheme of a three-tier network under the Ministry of AYUSH. The activities are reported monthly to the Intermediary Centre for Pharmacovigilance (IPvC) at the National Institute of Homoeopathy, Kolkata. From the IPvC, the signals are assessed further and reported to the NPvC regularly at the All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi.

NHRIMH, Kottayam, has been designated as one of the Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centres (PPvC) under the Central Sector Scheme of Pharmacovigilance for ASU&H drugs since July 2018. The Officer in Charge of the Institute, Dr. K.C Muraleedharan, is serving as the Coordinator of PPvC, Kottayam. Dr. Anju V Nath, Programme Assistant, is assisting with the activities of the pharmacovigilance centre.

    Activities of PPvC

 •    Conducting Orientation programs on Pharmacovigilance among homoeopathic physicians and paramedical staff working under Dept. of Homeopathy all over the state of Kerala
•    Collect reports of Adverse Drug Events after administering homoeopathic medicine from an identifiable reporter.
•    Sending the collected Advershostee Drug Events (ADE)/Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR) report to IPvC & NPvC.
•    Tracing Misleading advertisements in the homoeopathy sector as per the objectionable advertisement act 1954.
•    Reporting identifiable misleading advertisements and claims regarding homoeopathic medicines in print, T.V., and electronic media to The Drugs Controller &Licensing Authority, Govt of Kerala
•    A report of the action taken by the State Licensing Authority is periodically sent to the higher pharmacovigilance centre (NPvC).
•    Ensuring Patient safety at all levels (Materiovigilance, Haemovigilance, drug vigilance)

7. HOSPITAL PHARMACY

•    This department provides the medicating and dispensing medicines according to the Standard guidelines of Homoeopathy in the most hygienic environment.
•    The registration fee collected from all patients includes the approved govt. charges for the medications also.

8. LABORATORY FACILITY

Laboratory facilities for Haematological and Biochemical investigations are available. The investigations are charged as per Govt. approved rates. For BPL patients and Research cases, these charges are not applicable. The other special tests related to projects for which facilities are unavailable are being outsourced.

9. OTHER MEDICAL FACILITY

• X-ray: The Institute is equipped with Digital X-ray Unit. As part of the radiological investigations, general and research cases, X-rays are done on all OPD days. It is free for BPL Patients and nominal charges for others.
• ECG: The staff will take this investigation per the patient's requirement.

10. HOSTEL 

Inauguration of Hostel block on 1.9.2022 by Sh. Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon,ble Union Cabinet Minister of Ayush & Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in the presence of Sh. Kodikunnil Suresh, M.P. and other dignitaries.  A total of 103 rooms are available, and 183 students can accommodate.  Gents and Ladies' hostels were constructed separately, and a common kitchen, Library, T.V. room, and gym were available at the hostel block.

11. Other Facilities

A. Seminar Hall

A fully air-conditioned Seminar hall with 400 seating capacity is available in the Institute to organize seminars / CME/ Orientation training programs. Currently, a seminar hall is available for scientific, research, and government organizations for conducting seminars on Medical related activities with a nominal fee structure.

B. In-house Kitchen

• A balanced nutritious diet, including Breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner, is served to the patients in a well-disciplined manner.
• The food is prepared in a hygienic environment in a well-equipped kitchen, keeping in mind the sensitive state of health of the ailing patients.
 

C. Power Laundry

Fully automated Power Laundry has been functioning, providing clean linen and crisp uniforms to the patients

D . Canteen

The Canteen service is available on the Institute premises.

E . Ambulance Service

The ambulance is available for emergency services, peripheral OPDs, and Medical camps.
